The Student Health Insurance Plan is available to all qualifying UT students for purchase. The insurance carrier for this plan is Blue Cross Blue Shield and allows for coverage at University Health Services, as well as in-network and out-of-network coverage off campus - even nationwide PPO coverage
Information on the plan’s benefits including the complete plan booklet are available online. Deductible, co-insurance, and copayment responsibilities for covered services are waived for care at Student Health Centers, like UHS.
Voluntary enrollment for domestic students is managed by Academic Health Plans and can only be completed online during the appropriate open enrollment period or for a qualifying life event. Academic Health Plans has provided a guide to the self-enrollment process.
Enrollment for benefits eligible Academic Graduate Student Employees is managed by UT Benefits and Academic Health Plans. Most AGS employees are automatically enrolled after making their benefit selections, however open enrollment and qualifying life event enrollment are also available. If you have additional questions not answered by Academic Health Plans, please contact your Human Resources representative.
Enrollment for International and ELC students is managed by Texas Global and Academic Health Plans. International and ELC students who are required to have insurance should not enroll online. Please find this guide from Texas Global to answer some frequently asked questions.
UT Austin SHIP coverage allows you to add additional dependents to your policy, however only UT students are eligible to be seen at University Health Services.
Does SHIP offer dental and vision coverage?Dental and vision coverage for yourself and dependents can be purchased during open enrollment periods from Academic Health Plans. University Health Services does not offer dental or vision services.
How do I obtain my insurance card?Physical cards:
Blue Cross Blue Shield is responsible for mailing out physical insurance cards to their members. Please confirm your current mailing address on file with Academic Health Plans is correct. You may request a physical card through the Blue Access/BAM system or mobile app after confirming your address in the BAM system.
Digital cards:
Digital insurance cards are available 24/7 through the Blue Access/BAM system or mobile app. Once logged in select Member ID Card to view or download it OR navigate to the ID card icon on the left side of the mobile version.
Need help with your member information to create a BAM system account?
First go to the AHP website to Find your Group and Member ID using your EID and date of birth.
With this information, you will then be able to proceed to creating a log-in with the Blue Access/BAM system or mobile app.
We recommend all SHIP members keep a digital copy of their insurance card saved on their phones for easy access.
How do I find an in-network doctor or other healthcare provider?You can search in-network providers online. Select “Blue Choice PPO” for Network Type. You can also call the doctor’s office directly to inquire whether they are a part of the Blue Choice PPO network.
How do I know what my plan will cover?You can refer to the plan brochure, labeled Master Policy, on the Academic Health Plan benefits page. Or call Blue Cross Blue Shield customer service at 800-521-2227.
Who do I contact for customer support?For SHIP enrollment information, contact Academic Health Plans at help.ahpcare.com or by phone at 855-247-7587. Online chat support is also available.
For Benefits and claims questions, contact Blue Cross Blue Shield at (855) 267-0214. Ask to speak to your Benefits Value Advisor, who can help you navigate your plan and help with things like getting cost estimates for procedures and services, scheduling specialists appointments, or setting up prior authorizations.
